Artist Statement

I use the contemporary urban environment (cities, airports, office
spaces, etc.) as a motif for exploring visual elements and their
relationships. My subjects are selected for their design elements,
which allows for the manipulation of pure colour within the composition.

I do, however, acknowledge through my work the dependence of
colour, tone and texture on the appearance and tactility of the "actual"
physical world; the way in which I use these elements being a direct outcome of
first hand experience. By working in this manner I am acknowledging
the need for the empirical relationship and the vital energy that is found
therein.

These works, then, aim at a post-conceptual, post-appropriation
freshness bought about by a reconciliation of painting and the world,
and attempt to reinstate the immediate as a legitimate concern for
contemporary painting.

The total outcome I am searching for is a balance between the moment and the permanent, atmosphere and structure, and between art and the world.

All of this necessarily infers that the self-contemplative and internalizing nature of much contemporary art, rather than bring about new and fresh epiphanies as is so often claimed, has become the prevailing orthodoxy with it's attendant loss of vitality.
